This September the Bloomsbury forests will open for exploration, discovery and learning. Your child and family can be part of the first Forest School in Middle Tennessee! Our inaugural forest school begins on September 4, 2019. Classes will meet Wednesday through Friday from 9-Noon (ages 3-6) and 1-4 (ages 7-12) rain or shine, hot or frosty. Each family is free to choose the number of days their child attends each week.
This generations children spend more time than ever inside and scientists are still studying the long term effects of nature deficit on child development. The benefits of playing in nature are almost infinite. It gives the child opportunities to confront unique circumstances and practice problem solving. They become more resilient as they learn the key to happiness is not in whatever or whoever is entertaining them, but in how they interact and respond to the world in the present moment. The health benefits alone are worth noting. Uneven terrain and obstacles such as sticks and rocks help a child develop coordination and balance. Eye sight is improved as the child adjusts quickly between the long view and the close up. It combats childhood obesity by keeping kids’ active and engaged, increasing their flexibility and gross motor skills. Children who dig in and (yes occasionally ingest) healthy soil have stronger immune systems and healthier gut microbes than peers who live in more sterile (ahem dirt free) environments.
I could go on and on, but it’s too much magic for one newsletter so you will just have to come and see for yourself. If you are interested in attending forest school this fall please contact firstname.lastname@example.org schedule a visit or to chat with the teacher, Jessica Plumlee.
Mark your calendars for Bloomsbury Forest School Open House: Friday, August 30th from 2-5 pm. Bring your littles, take a tour of base camp, and meet other enthusiastic forest school families. We will serve light refreshments and have a nature themed craft for the children to take home! We will also have paperwork ready to fill out if you want to sign up.
